Out of the corner of your eye you swore you saw it. Movement maybe, or perhaps just a trick of light but still it eats away at you for a split second longer than it should and that bug of curiosity gets beneath your skin. That hallway where the noise came from suddenly doesn't seem so dark and mysterious. In fact maybe it holds all the answers to those questions that sneak up on you in the middle of the night. So you start to think that just this once you'll step across that line in the sand that keeps you safe in that world you know.
Before that happens though he'll rush past you. It's an odd notion to think that someone could be running into the danger... running toward that shrill cry of a shriek but there he goes. Of course he gets only a few steps down that hallway before he turns and takes a look at you.
"What's your name... actually that's not important what are you doing in here?"
You stammer for a moment unsure of just why you were there in the first place. You respond with something brief about hearing a noise... someone crying out.. that you thought you'd help. The man will look at you, and give you a once over that for a moment feels almost flirtatious, but given the danger... you're positive it couldn't have been that.
"Look this is being handled... so just turn around and head home. Forget what you thought you heard, trust me you'll sleep better tonight."
The way he says it... you almost think he believes it. Then the look he gives you just reaffirms it. Not only does he believe it he trusts that you believe him. It's hesitation in your words and your feet as you try to ignore all your curiosity and just move on. A simple shake of your head dismissing that instinct and a step backward away from it all before you turn to leave the way you came. He's already back to the near full sprint into the darkness but you call out to him... the curiosity far too much for you now. He's told you to leave, to forget it all and it's almost as if you've been told you can't look at something that you swore you saw.
"Who are you??"
He stops in his tracks and turns to face you, the wool coat billowing in the air as his turn is quicker than you'd have expected it to be, "Name's Captain Jack Harkness and like I said, you really should think about turning around and leaving here... we've got this under control." Then there is a smile, and you swear he winked at you before he turned around and faded into the shadows. Leaving that hallway and exiting the building that name is going to ring in your ears for the rest of the night until you convince yourself that the whole thing was just in your head... because really... what sort of Captain behaves like that?
